Peter Kenington of Andrew Corporation Named Technical Chair of OBSAI

Orland Park, Illinois, June 30, 2004 Peter Kenington, PhD, Director of the Bristol Advanced Technology Center for Andrew Corporation, has been named technical chair of OBSAI (Open Base Station Architecture Initiative). Andrew is a member organization and committed to standardization of base station products.

The OBSAI forum of nearly 100 telecommunications companies is developing open specifications for base station architectures that will ensure interchangeability and interoperability of products from different manufacturers and lead to a faster time to market and cost savings for operators. In this new position, Dr Kenington will lead the technical work groups with overall responsibility for the technical progress of the OBSAI standards, their accuracy and applicability - also ensuring timely delivery of the documents. He will also be called upon to represent OBSAI to outside technical organizations and the press.

“Peter is only the second person to hold this position. We chose him not only because of his outstanding technical knowledge and industry experience,” said Jukka Klemettila, OBSAI Chairman, “but because he has been a vital participant in our organization and has the respect of our members.”

“I am pleased to follow Joseph Cleveland of Samsung who held the chair since OBSAI was formed in summer 2002,” said Dr. Kenington. “He spearheaded development of the interface standards and directed OBSAI toward achieving goals to date. My task is to deliver the remaining standards and lead the drive for this initiative to become a world standard.”

OBSAI specifications cover the interfaces between the control, baseband, transport, and radio modules in addition to standardization of key aspects of the modules themselves. Radio base stations that use the Open Base Station Architecture will be fully compatible with standard radio interfaces such as WCDMA, GSM/EDGE, and CDMA.
