OBSAI welcomes CPRI Initiative

The Open Base Station Architecture Initiative (OBSAI) welcomes the recently launched CPRI initiative. It is a further demonstration of growing recognition of the importance of open internal specifications, in the future development of cellular base stations

Jukka Klemettila, current Chairperson of OBSAI, comments, ‘The founding members of OBSAI recognised the need for open internal specifications, covering the entire base station architecture, when the initiative was first conceptualised and launched last year. Since then the membership base has grown considerably and now includes over 40 companies from all sectors of the industry, comprising: base station vendors, module vendors and component vendors. Recent new members include, Alcatel and Panasonic. In addition, work has progressed so well that the first interface specifications are available now, for members of OBSAI to use. ‘

Mr Klemettila continues, ‘CPRI appears to be aiming to achieve open specifications that will contribute to a more cost efficient approach to the ever-escalating costs of research and development (R&D) and production. Since this work may complement the work of OBSAI, we welcome the opportunity to seek mutual benefits.’

The Open Base Station Architecture Initiative is open to all base station, module and component supplier companies in the telecommunications industry.
