OBSAI incorporates LTE into its specifications

OBSAI thanks its members for their hard work in adding LTE to RP3 – a first in the industry.

The Open Base Station Architecture Initiative (OBSAI) - a leading industry forum of over 140
telecommunications companies which is creating a suite of open specifications for base station architectures - announced today the availability of a new version of the OBSAI RP3 interface specification which now includes full support for the forthcoming LTE (long term evolution) standard currently under development within 3GPP. The RP3 specification covers the high-speed digital interface required between the baseband and RF sections within a base-station.

“OBSAI is proud to announce the incorporation of the emerging LTE standards within the RP3 specification, somewhat ahead of the LTE standard itself. OBSAI is a responsive industry forum that wants to enhance and develop open interface specifications for new radio access technologies“ says head of OBSAI Management Board Tero Mustala. “It is important to incorporate new standards within the OBSAI specifications at the earliest possible opportunity; this ensures that new OBSAI base-station products can enter the market ahead of those using alternative standards or proprietary interfaces” Mustala explains. The specification is based on current 3GPP LTE documentation and will be changed accordingly in the event that the 3GPP documentation is modified, although relevant modifications are thought to be unlikely to occur.

OBSAI also plans to add LTE to its remaining interface and system specifications by the end of this year.

OBSAI thanks its growing membership for their dedicated work in ensuring that OBSAI retains the leading position it occupies today within the industry.
